Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System This Season.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the right to challenge specific calls made by the official, mirroring the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
