The New Mayor Promises a 'Dawn' for NYC in Inaugural Speech
During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a new era” and an audacious start to his term.
A Groundbreaking Mayor
The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.
Defying counsel to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.
A Sweeping Platform
Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

- Free buses
- A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
- A pilot of city-run grocery stores
The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing Political Challenges
The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.
Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.
The Basic Tests of Governing
Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth subway operation.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.
As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
