Space Traveler Shares Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included well-known figures.

The mission was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.

She concluded that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the mission, including spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included leaders in multiple disciplines.
